Understanding transport choices and behaviours

A wide range of factors affect the demand for transport and the choices we make between different modes of transport, from demographic shifts to changes in employment patterns and evolving land use.  We aim to understand these factors, then identify the most effective mechanisms for achieving ‘modal shift’ towards active and sustainable travel modalities, and characterise the associated benefits for air quality and public health.

We seek to understand the impacts of changes already underway in many UK cities, such as the introduction of Clean Air Zones.  There are also potential future changes in the transport sector, such as a shift from the purchase of vehicles as commodities towards on-demand mobility as a service. We will explore how these changes influence access to transport (i.e., mobility), exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution and, ultimately, impacts upon health outcomes for different population groups.
